LPS Tag and Label, Winston-Salem NC, has been working closely with a chewing tobacco manufacture to produce labels for the outside wraps as well as lid labels for tobacco cans. These labels are somewhat difficult to handle as tensions have to be very accurate and web handling (12 lanes of 3/4 labels to 22 ODs)
can be cumbersome.
They had a competitors machine to start with. When finishing with this machine, LPS would run 10 lanes across. This machine did the required job with some limitations. The machine frequently locked 2 lanes together, (making those lanes unusable) and top speed to get 8 good lanes would be 300 fpm. They were ready to place a PO for another 5 slitting machines to keep up with their customers demands. With check in hand for these machines, they stumbled upon CEI.
CEI demonstrated some state of the art tension control as well as slip differential rewinding. LPS took the chance, purchasing a CEI machine. Not only did LPS save money on the machine, they also, upped thier production 5 times! The CEI is running consistently at 1,200-1,400 fpm, and now LPS runs these rolls 12 and 15 lanes across. With the CEIs precision tensioning control, LPS gets all good lanes equalling no wasted rolls!
So in the end, LPS, who was going to purchase 5 of the competitors machines, purchased 1 from CEI. The 1 got the production LPS required, while lowering their overhead-thus keeping them more competitive.
LPS has since grown and has purchased an additional CEI machine to push out other labels and product.
